CS2 Case Hardened Blue Gem Guide: Patterns, Tiers & Prices 2026
What Is a Case Hardened Blue Gem?
Case Hardened is one of the most unique finishes in CS2. Unlike other skins where the pattern is purely cosmetic, Case Hardened skins have a randomized mix of blue, gold, and purple determined by the item's paint seed (pattern index). Skins with a high percentage of bright blue are called "blue gems" — and they command massive premiums over market price.
The paint seed is assigned when the item drops or is unboxed and cannot be changed. The same seed always produces the same pattern on the same weapon, so collectors track specific seeds across every trade.
Pattern Tier System (Tier 1–4)
The community rates Case Hardened patterns into four tiers based on blue percentage on the playside (the side you see in-game):
| Tier | Blue Coverage | Rarity | Price Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 70–100% blue | Extremely rare | 5x–100x+ market price |
| Tier 2 | 50–70% blue | Very rare | 3x–10x market price |
| Tier 3 | 30–50% blue | Uncommon | 1.5x–3x market price |
| Tier 4 | Under 30% blue | Common | Market price or slight premium |
Important: Both playside and backside matter, but playside blue is what primarily determines tier and value. A "double-sided" blue gem (blue on both sides) is worth significantly more than playside-only.
AK-47 Case Hardened — The Icon
The AK-47 Case Hardened is the most iconic blue gem weapon in CS2. Pattern seed #661, known as the "Blue Top" or "Scar Pattern", features nearly 100% blue on the top of the gun and is the single most sought-after Case Hardened pattern in existence.

Gloves — Case Hardened Exists Too
Hydra Gloves | Case Hardened also feature the blue pattern system. While they don't have the same dramatic Tier 1 blue gems as knives, they pair beautifully with blue gem knives and AK-47s.
- Hydra Gloves | Case Hardened (FT): from ~$87
- Blue-heavy patterns command a premium over gold-heavy ones
- Perfect combo: Hydra Gloves CH + AK-47 Blue Top for a full blue loadout
How Paint Seeds Work
Every Case Hardened skin has a paint seed (pattern template index) from 1 to 1000. Key facts:
- Same seed = same pattern — pattern 661 on an AK-47 will always be the Blue Top, regardless of who owns it or when it dropped
- Different weapons, different results — seed 661 looks completely different on a Karambit vs. an AK-47
- Float value affects wear but NOT the pattern layout — a 0.01 float and 0.37 float with the same seed have the same blue distribution
- StatTrak multiplier — ST versions of blue gem patterns are exponentially rarer and more expensive

Investment Potential
Case Hardened blue gems are among the strongest long-term investments in CS2:
- Fixed supply — specific patterns can only come from case openings, and odds of hitting Tier 1 are extremely low
- Growing demand — as CS2 grows, more players want iconic blue gems
- Pattern 661 AK-47 has appreciated from ~$5,000 in 2020 to $30,000+ in 2026
- Karambit Tier 1 patterns have consistently held value above $10,000
- Unlike Doppler knives, blue gems are truly unique — each pattern is one-of-a-kind per weapon type
